Once more, it was a time of peace.
With the latest threat to the galaxy, the YUUZHAN VONG, dealt with, the New Republic, and the New Jedi Order, had come into a relaxed state. The Order, led by LUKE SKYWALKER, had dedicated itself to two things: the pursuit of knowledge, overtly, and the elimination of any threat of a Dark Side rising, covertly.
After Luke’s findings at Myrkr, he had once more fully believed in the dark, twisting presence of the Dark Side of the Force, and as such, had been sending his most trusted Knights and Masters out on secret operations to find and eliminate any Dark Side presence. However, the very nature of the Dark Side is to, in itself, be ever elusive, and one would never know for sure whether its taint would be forever eliminated or not...
During these times, two men had specifically made their way up through the ranks, faster than many at the time, and would turn the heads of all who witnessed them. Their names were SOLIS FAY’DEN and MARTH HARLOT.
The two were the best of friends, they had grown up and went through the Academy together from the young age of eight. Their progress was just short of outstanding, few had ever seen such pupils grow in their skills so quickly. They would work together, study together, and even train together. Thus, it was only obvious they would catch the eyes of the Grand Master of the Master Council, Luke Skywalker, and be sent on secret missions as a unit. As could be expected, they got the job done better than most of even the more exalted masters.
While Solis proved to be a very bright student, wisdom exceeding men many years his senior, Marth was, on the other, a martial expert, exceeding not only in lightsaber skills, but in military tactics and ideas. Together, with Solis’s insight and Marth’s effectiveness, nothing could seemingly stand between them, and the two were truly inseparable.
Until the day of Jedi Master promotions.
The Knights were to come visit Master Skywalker separately to receive the news, if they were to be promoted to the rank of Master, or to spend another season as a Knight, so as not to leave those Jedi that were not promoted with a sense of inferiority to their peers, so as to stifle the jealousy that may result. Solis and Marth, however, felt they needed not abide by that little matter, since they had always been together as a team, it was only fitting that they should receive the news of their promotion, or lack thereof, as a team.
Going in, Solis’s mind was completely clear of assumptions or expectations. He knew that he and Marth had done a fine job in their Jedi training, but knew that holding such strong attachments to such a small goal was rash, and unwise. Marth, on the other hand, was confident and excited. He knew, as well, how well they had progressed, and knew that over anyone, they truly deserved the rank and title of Jedi Master.
Thus, the young Knight’s jaw had dropped almost completely to the floor when Master Skywalker, his face glum, awarded Solis the Master rank, and Solis alone.
Afterwards, Marth approached Luke earnestly, asking him what had prevented him from obtaining the title. Luke, very plainly, told Marth the truth: That while he was an astounding warrior and problem-solver, he was not as much of a Jedi. His tactics were often aggressive and straight-forward, which Luke considered to be too close to the Dark Side to be able to earn Marth the title of Jedi Master.
Marth became angry, tired, fed up with an organization that seemingly could not reward its kind for their successes. He kept his mouth shut, telling no one, not even Solis, his dissatisfaction. What he did instead, however, was continue to go on his missions, hunting down Sith knowledge...
For the first time, Marth did not just destroy the Sith books, datapads, and holocrons on sight. Having requested to take new missions by himself, giving the Master Council the impression that he ‘felt he needed some alone time to further explore the inner workings of the Jedi and the Force’, Marth was free to peruse the contents of the Sith lore to his heart’s desire, soaking in all of the knowledge of the ancient beliefs. As he read, he found it much, much more suited to his own ideas and beliefs, and began to wonder just how right the Jedi Order was after all...
The years went by, and Master Skywalker finally aged beyond a point where even the Force could no longer carry him. Many of the other Masters of old had also either passed away, or were no longer in any shape to govern. The Solo twins had both went off to pursue their own ends, to find the Force in their own way. The most obvious heir to the position of Leader was Ben Skywalker, but he, at fourteen, was barely a Knight himself. Thus, Skywalker promoted the man who he thought was best suited for the job, the one who constantly served as a voice of reason on the Council, and had helped Skywalker himself on more than a few occasions, both in the temple and out in the field, indeed, the very man who stood by his bedside during his final moments, hoping for his safe passage.
Solis Fay’den.
The next day, Solis went about declaring the news of his ascension to GRAND MASTER, hoping to acclimatize the rest of the Order to the change. Afterwards, he visited Marth privately, to speak to him, and him alone. Marth congratulated his good friend sincerely on his promotion, however, when Solis offered them the chance of a lifetime, to be his second-in-command, to help oversee all the training alongside him, Marth politely refused. Being quite frank with his friend, Marth explained the extensive research he had been doing on the Sith ways, and that he was respectfully resigning from the Order to form a new Sith Academy. Solis was astounded, but as a whole, not fully put off. He understood just as well as Marth the man’s anger and disappointment at being passed over for Master so long ago, when he was truly a capable individual, and had often wondered himself, deep in thought in his quarters, if Marth wasn’t following the wrong path.
Thus, he struck a deal with his best friend.
He allowed his friend his resignation, and would keep the knowledge of the existence of the Sith Academy a secret to all. Marth could do as he liked, recruit and convert Solis’s Jedi as he pleased, if he could. Solis had become interested in Sith lore as of late, as well, yet he wanted to see how the ideals truly stacked up against Jedi ideals. Marth agreed, smiling, and the two shook hands, as Solis left Marth’s quarters with their friendship just as strong as ever. Marth would pack up and leave surreptitiously that night.
Thus would begin the NEW SITH WARS, a battle not fought over hatred and sheer fear of difference, but truly over ideals, a grand game between two men, two best friends, who so fully epitomized their own set of beliefs, to see which side, Light or Dark, truly was the ‘correct’ belief...
